About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled individual to support a critical programme evaluating the performance of materials used in the manufacture of cans. The role involves testing material performance by packing with model products, examining results after storage, and effectively communicating findings with actionable recommendations to project leaders and business stakeholders.
This post is a fixed term contract, 9-12 months maternity cover.
Key Responsbilities
Plan and Conduct Pack Performance Tests:
- Prepare food products using standard recipes and pack cans (filling, seaming, and cooking) to industry standards.
- Open and prepare cans for examination.
- Manage workload and sample tracking using appropriate IT systems to ensure full traceability through accurate documentation and labelling.
- Support sample tracking, storage, and archiving
Evaluate Container, Coating, and Product Performance:
- Accurately record critical can performance indicators.
- Conduct visual examinations, noting significant features and relating observations to potential failure modes.
- Compile and communicate findings in formal reports, including clear and actionable conclusions.
Impact on Innovations and Changes:
- Address unusual observations and escalate as needed.
- Communicate critical results to business leaders, even when findings are unfavourable.
- Apply appropriate techniques to investigate and resolve defects while maintaining quality standards.
- Prioritize tasks effectively during high-demand periods.
Key Skills
Essential:
- Degree or equivalent in a science subject, or several years of relevant experience in a technical support role.
- Practical, self-motivated individual capable of working with minimal supervision after initial training.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Strong desire to work in a laboratory or pilot plant environment.
Desirable:
- Experience in metal packaging technology (e.g., food, beverage, or aerosol cans, or metal vacuum closures).
- Experience in food or beverage filling and processing.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques (e.g., DOE, capability, SPC).
- Training in relevant investigation techniques.
